This is a 10 weeks ceramics course that runs from April - July 2024 on Saturday mornings from 9:30 am - 12:30 pm. 

It is a great introduction to the world of ceramics. Whether you're a beginner or have some experience, this course offers a hands-on experience where you can experiment with shapes, colours, and textures. During the course, you'll learn basic hand building techniques, enabling you to create pottery pieces of your own design. From coil pots to pinch pots, you'll explore various methods of shaping the clay. In addition to building techniques, you'll delve into the fascinating realm of glazes and colours. Learn how to apply glazes effectively to achieve desired effects, whether it's for a glossy finish or a textured surface. Discover the interplay between different colours and how they can transform your creations into unique works of art.

This course is not just about learning; it's an opportunity to relax, discover, and express your creativity.

Dates and Times:

3 hour classes. Saturdays: 9:30 am - 12:30 pm, excluding holidays. 

Saturdays: 6 April, 13 April, 25 May, 1 June, 8 June, 15 June,  22 June, 29 June, 6 July and 13 July. 


  • Material and Tools Knowledge: Gain an understanding of the essentials for starting your ceramic journey.
  • Construction Techniques: Learn the Slab Technique for creating forms by rolling and joining flat slabs of clay, the Pinch Technique for mastering the shaping of clay by pinching and pulling, and the Coil Technique for exploring how to form shapes by rolling out and assembling clay coils.
  • Shaping and Surface Design Techniques: Discover Sgraffito for scratching through layers of slip or underglaze to reveal contrasting colors beneath and Carving and Incising for creating patterns and textures on the surface.
  • Glazing and Colouring Techniques: Learn about glazing methods such as brushing, dipping, pouring, or spraying on bisque-fired pottery, and applying Underglazes to greenware before bisque firing.

Learning Goals

Initially, we will start with two hands-on projects to cover some foundational skills:

  • Handling different types of clay
  • Various building techniques
  • Producing utilitarian objects
  • Surface design
  • Handling glazes

Languages: English and German

Number of course participants: 4 participants required for this course to start. 

Cost: Fr. 620 + Fr. 25 per Kg. of materials including two firings
